Japanese Beetle
This problem spreads through handling, insects or soil rather than the weather, so there is no live forecast risk — focus on prevention below.
When it strikes
About
Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles that swarm in midsummer to skeletonise the leaves of roses, grapes, fruit trees and hundreds of plants, while their grubs damage lawn roots.
Symptoms
Leaves skeletonised to a lacy network between the veins, chewed flowers and fruit, and clusters of feeding beetles on warm sunny days; brown patches in lawns from root-feeding grubs.
Organic Treatment
Hand-pick beetles into soapy water in the early morning, spray neem to deter feeding, and treat lawn grubs with beneficial nematodes or milky spore.
Chemical Treatment
Carbaryl or pyrethroids for severe foliage damage; avoid blooming plants to protect pollinators.
Prevention
Hand-pick early to reduce aggregation, avoid pheromone traps that attract more beetles, treat lawn grubs, and choose less-favoured plants.
